Interest in vegetable gardening has grown in recent years. There are obvious benefits to growing at least a few of your own vegetables not the least of which is the fun that is created for your family by planting, caring for, and harvesting something you have grown yourselves.
March is a chilly month, but still a good time to prepare for the warmer weather to come. Loosen the soil in your vegetable patch and rake over breaking up any large clods of soil. Avoid stepping on the soil which will compact it if it is still very wet.
To give plants the earliest possible start, you can begin sowing seeds indoors now. Lettuce, tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, and cucumbers are just a few of the vegetables you may want to sow indoors now.
Outdoors you can plant early seed potatoes, shallot, onion or garlic sets and asparagus crowns.
Prune old growth from any of your perennial herbs such as rosemary, thyme, and sage. These, by the way are easy and fun to grow along with many annual herbs.
