One of the most commonly asked for piece of advice is what we recommend for an evergreen foundation shrub. While there are certainly many choices depending on your sun exposure, desired height, and deer population, I can't think of anything more versatile than boxwood. Without a doubt it is the least foraged plant when it comes to deer and with the many varieties now on the market, you will have no problem finding just the size necessary for your situation.
Boxwood survive beautifully in sun to partial sun and respond well to pruning when needed, but can also be kept in a looser form for those who prefer a less formal garden. Boxwood combines well with roses and perennials as well as other shrubs with a different color or texture. Some varieties are more upright and can anchor a garden bed or flag your doorway planted in a decorative container. Others grow easily into a small hedge and will define an herb garden nicely.
