How to Plant Bulbs
October 27, 2011

Spring flowering bulbs provide a colorful display just when we need it the most. We're tired of the cold damp weather and the early spring color from fall planted bulbs gives us that boost of hope we crave to remind that milder weather is just around the bend. Planting bulbs requires very little time and effort but the results are amazing.

Choose healthy bulbs that are not dried, withered, spongy or moldy. In general, the larger the bulb for its kind, the more flowers you will have in the spring.

Choose the right location. Most flowering bulbs require full sun but keep in mind that almost any area has adequate sun when you consider that most bulbs bloom before deciduous trees leaf out.

Well drained soil will prevent your bulbs from rotting in the cool weather.

Plant bulbs as long as the soil is soft enough to dig a hole and remember that planting before mid November ensures that roots will have adequate time to develop.

Plant bulbs with the pointed side up. You may see some shriveled roots on the flatter side and if you really can't tell, don't worry. One way or another, the stem will find its way up in the spring.

Mix fertilizer into the soil at the bottom of the hole when you plant to encourage root growth.

If you are concerned about rodents eating your bulbs be sure to use a product to deter them from foraging.

After planting, water the bulbs to help them settle in and remove any air pockets. During the fall and winter you will not have to water unless we experience a particularly dry season. From what I have read, that is not likely!

We have a great selection of bulbs and all the necessary products to give you success. You will be so glad that this year you finally got around to planting spring flowering bulbs!
