The cold weather that we knew would come has arrived. While I begin to long for spring foliage and flowers, I also enjoy the simplicity of the landscape this time of year. Evergreens provide the reminder that garden plants have not died, but are just dormant until the days are longer and the temperatures rise. Take a look around at the amazing structure of large shade trees and the more delicate branching of ornamental and flowering plants.
Japanese Maples are in some ways more interesting in the winter when their incredible form is visible along with the color of their bark and branches. Up-lighting your Japanese Maple in the winter will give you a new perspective on the beauty of that specimen tree, especially with new fallen snow resting on the branches. Have you noticed the red and yellow twig dogwoods in the landscape? Plan to add that native shrub to your landscape this spring if you have not already planted a grouping. Winterberry Holly still boasts beautiful red berries and you may even have hellebores starting to bud. Give witch hazels just a few more weeks when buds will form and begin to open into their graceful fringe-like flowers.
If none of that really does it for you, remember that a quick and effective fix to those winter doldrums is a visit to our greenhouse where you will find interesting and colorful houseplants in all sizes, shapes, and colors. Ask one of our experts to help you with selection and plant care requirements. Then pick up the perfect container in our garden department for the finishing touch. Let us help you chase away the winter blues. Come in and browse our indoor departments today. Valentine's Day is just around the corner!
