Time to Plan for the Season Ahead
February 02, 2012

Without the cover of snow, you may have noticed a number of interesting plants this winter to add to your landscape for seasonal appeal. Unfortunately you may not be able to find them in your garden center immediately but if you do, you should be careful about planting this time of year. Some hardy shrubs have an excellent chance of survival but others will have a hard time acclimating to the many changes in temperature and conditions.

Take heart! This is an excellent time to plan for the season ahead and determine to add winter interest long before next year. Consider adding a few of these plants this spring:

Twig Dogwood: A shrub form with handsome spring foliage, flower, and berry. The branches change to amazing winter colors ranging from bright yellow to deep red.

Royal Star Magnolia: A compact multi-stemmed tree. The pussy willow-like buds open in March to graceful white flowers.

Witch Hazel: A large growing shrub with amazing fringe-like flowers in shades of copper, red, and yellow which will emerge as early as mid-February. Fall foliage color is outstanding, and it is extremely resistant to disease.

Harry Lauder's Walking Stick: The twisted stems are most interesting in winter and early spring when the catkins form before the leaves emerge. Even the spring and summer foliage is twisted. Most plant it just for the winter appeal.

Winterberry Holly: It is likely that you won't even notice this deciduous holly until the foliage falls and the bright red berries appear up and down the stems. The berries last from September to February and sometimes longer. Great for cutting stems for Christmas arrangements and containers.

All of these plants are available here at Waterloo Gardens in the spring and some are in our inventory already. Please call or come in and talk to one of our plant experts. We can help you with choices that extend the beauty of your landscape to all four seasons!
