Undoubtedly one of the most beautiful flowering shrubs is the camellia. In addition to the blossoms, which remind you of a rose or a peony in shades of red, pink, yellow, and white, the foliage is an outstanding dark glossy green. The plant is generally disease and insect resistant and the flowering occurs in cold temperatures when almost nothing else is in bloom.
Spring planting is ideal as this plant needs the season to develop a strong root system to survive our colder winters. Only in recent years have we seen many camellias in Mid-Atlantic nurseries. When planting, amend the soil with rich organic matter such as humus and composted manure, which adds nutrients and good moisture absorption. Then finish with a top dressing of 3" - 4" of mulch. New plants must be watered thoroughly throughout the first year and after that during dry spells that inevitably come in our hot summers.
Prune after flowering to shape and control the size of your shrub and renew vigor to an older plant. Treat for disease and pests only if necessary and consider winter protection to ensure success.
Camellias are currently in stock in both of our stores and ready to plant. Visit our nursery department and talk to one of our experts for advice on selection and planting of this amazing shrub.
