March is over and the old adage of "in like a lion and out like a lamb'" just happened in reverse, but we certainly can't complain about one of the warmest early springs on record!
Even so, while the weather seems to be trending warmer, we will undoubtedly have to deal with some very cold night time temperatures again. Be prepared!
Since the warm temperatures forced many plants to flower and leaf out early, the new growth is particularly susceptible to frost damage when the nights become seasonably cold. Keep several bed sheets ready to cover plants when the temperatures dip into the lower thirties. Secure with bricks, blocks, or rocks to keep the sheets from blowing away and then uncover the plants in the morning as the weather warms.
Cloudy and rainy nights actually protect your plants from damage and heavy wind also keeps the frost from settling on the ground and consequently damaging plants. If you are concerned at all it is better to be safe than sorry.
While you may inadvertently miss a night or forget to cover, the damage done will not be permanent. Flowers will not reappear this season, but foliage will push out again and there is no reason to think that your plants will die unless you have put out tender annuals. In that case, it is possible for loss to occur. So plant only cold weather annuals and wait until at least May 1st to plant the rest!
