We are about to celebrate the holiday that honors mothers, but believe it or not, Mother's Day was not conceived in the boardroom of Hallmark. Annual tributes to mothers date all the way back to the Greeks and Romans and then on through the centuries in different cultures and in different ways.
In the United States Anna Jarvis, an Appalachian homemaker, organized a day almost 150 years ago to raise awareness of health conditions in her community. She believed that such a cause would best be promoted by mothers and she called it "Mother's Work Day.”
Several years later Julia Ward Howe, a poet, pacifist, suffragist, and author of the lyrics to the "Battle Hymn of the Republic" started a day encouraging mothers to rally for peace because she believed they bore the loss of human life more deeply than anyone else.
When Anna Jarvis died in 1905, her daughter, also named Anna, began to promote the idea of a specific day to give tribute to mothers. She lobbied prominent businessmen like John Wanamaker and politicians including Presidents Taft and Roosevelt to support her campaign. In 1914 Anna's hard work paid off when Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother's Day as a national holiday.
Mother's Day has blossomed in the United States and the second Sunday of May has become the most popular day of the year to dine out. Telephone lines record their highest traffic as sons and daughters everywhere express their appreciation for mom.
Some of us have lost our moms and this day can be bittersweet. That is true for all of us here at Waterloo Gardens as we remember our own "Mama Linda" on this first Mother's Day since she passed away in October. She loved that endearing title and we miss her in many different ways. Our stores are part of her legacy and we invite you here this week to shop for your mom where you will find selections in every department that celebrates the beauty and the love of your mother.
