Still our most popular Christmas plant, the poinsettia was introduced to the United States in 1825 by Joel Robert Poinsett, the first U.S. ambassador to Mexico. He obtained plants from southern Mexico where they thrived in wild forests. They are cultivated here by the millions in greenhouses all over the country just for the holiday season.
Plants thrive in bright light and high humidity so examining the soil daily is important. When the surface is dry to the touch, water the soil until it runs freely out the drainage hole in the container. If you place your plant in a saucer or container without drainage, discard any water collected so that the plant does not sit in water.
A window facing south, east, or west is preferable to a north facing location and daytime temperatures should be maintained at 65 to 75 degrees. Never allow a part of your poinsettia to touch a cold window pane or injury will occur and avoid exposing your plant to drafts which may cause premature leaf drop.
Enjoy poinsettias and other holiday favorites like Christmas cactus and cyclamen long after the season has ended. It is a process to get a poinsettia to rebloom the following year and an interesting challenge for those interested but often not successful. Not to worry. Waterloo Gardens will continue to carry these classic favorites year after year with many new and exciting cultivars to choose from!
