The Christmas Rose, Helleborus niger, is a popular evergreen perennial that has long been associated with Christmas, the New Year, and a longing for spring. It has shiny, deep green foliage and striking white flowers which usually appear in December or January and can last well into March. If you are looking for a unique gift this holiday season, the Christmas Rose is an excellent choice.
Since Hellebores can be sold well into winter, you may not be able to plant it right away. Late fall plantings are fine as long as your plants are protected from strong winter winds and are generously mulched to protect roots. If the ground is frozen or temperatures are consistently around freezing, you should keep your Christmas Rose inside in a bright, cool spot and wait to plant until early spring. Hellebores should be planted in partial shade and require fertile, moist, well-drained soil. Ideally, they prefer a location where they will receive winter sunlight and where their flowers can be enjoyed!
