Seasonal Tip

Successful Planting
July 09, 2010

Planting a successful garden and watching the plants develop and flourish is an extremely rewarding experience. For a beginner gardener, it may seem to be a bit intimidating but by following a few simple steps, you can be well on your way to seasons of landscaping beauty.

Our article on How to Plan a Garden speaks about the importance of planning, knowing your lighting levels, and selecting the right plants for your garden. This article will discuss proper planting techniques.

Before leaving the garden center, be sure to pick up your soil amendments. We recommend peat moss and an organic fertilizer. Peat moss is great, regardless of the type of soil you may have. It lightens up heavy clay soil and helps with drainage. Peat moss adds water and nutrient holding capacity to sandy soils. By adding an organic fertilizer at planting, you supply a controlled release of nutrients right at the root zone.

Using a garden spade, dig a hole that is larger than the diameter of your plant's container or root ball. Allow around 6" for average container-sized plants and 12” for larger trees and shrubs. The hole should be a little deeper than the height of the root ball.

Remove any large rocks or debris from the soil. Place the loose soil in a container and add your amendments at a rate of 1 part peat moss to 3 parts soil. Add the recommended rate of fertilizer and mix thoroughly.

Place your plant in the hole, and fill in around the plant with your amended soil. When finished, be sure to water thoroughly and continue to do so according to the plant's needs until it is established. If you have any questions, be sure to stop in and ask one of our experts.
