Seasonal Tip

Small Scale Water Gardening
June 21, 2009

A water garden is an excellent idea if you are looking for a unique feature to add to your outdoor living area. Not only do you get the opportunity to work with a different group of plants but you can also add the sound of water to your landscape. Before committing to a large in-ground project, (or if you are working with limited space) why not experiment with a container water garden?

Step One - Placement:
When determining the placement of your garden, take into consideration that a majority of water plants available require a minimum of 5 hours of direct sun per day. Shade plants can be found but it will limit the selection considerably. Also, look for a spot that will showcase your water feature.

Step Two - The Container:
Any waterproof container that holds a minimum of 4 gallons of water will do. If you search your property, you may find a unique treasure that will add a personal flair to your creation. Galvanized troughs and large glazed pottery are great choices! Whiskey barrels are another option but be sure to line the wood with a heavy plastic liner. Often times the wood will have absorbed substances that may be harmful to your plants.

Step Three - Water:
Fill your container with water. Many city water supplies contain some form of chlorine so it is necessary to use a chlorine remover before adding your plant material. To prevent mosquitoes, mosquito dunks are available.

Step Four - Adding a Pump:
Adding a small water pump will provide you with the pleasant sound of water to complement the beautiful garden that you are creating.

Remember to check your garden frequently to see if any water needs to be replenished. As the summer days get hotter, water will evaporate more quickly.
